Devon Shopping

Devon is one of England’s largest counties, and contains several large towns and cities. Consequently the county is well-equipped for shopping, but there’s more than just High Street shopping on offer – certainly the larger towns and cities, such as Plymouth, Exeter and Torquay are Devon’s main shopping centres, and offer an impressive array of the familiar High Street names, modern shopping malls, out of town shopping centres, and a host of cafes, restaurants and coffee shops to revive flagging shoppers. Move into the countryside and a different world of shopping appears – away from the hustle and bustle of the city, many of Devon’s market towns still offer frequent farmers’ markets, in which the freshest local produce can be bought. The county also has more than its share of smaller shops, specialist outlets and curiosity shops, with antiques in particular being well represented.

Exeter Shops

Big brand stores (Marks & Spencers, Debenhams) line the historic High Street. There are two Waterstones bookshops, a Virgin Megastore and a large Boots also on the High Street. Dingles is the city's original department store, also on the High Street and now run by House of Fraser. Guildhall and Harlequins are the city's two covered shopping centres (open daily), home to the likes of WHSmith, Argos, Woolworths, Body Shop and a Sainsburys Central. Cobbled Gandy Street is the place to browse for handmade crafts and discover one-off designer boutiques, pausing for cappuccinos in cosy cafés.

For arts, crafts and collectables try Exeters West Quarter, the Quayside and the Exeter Crafts Guild. Make an afternoon of it by browsing in antique shops, art galleries and boutiques of the historic riverside town of 'Topsham, a 20-minute bus ride or 12-minute train ride south of Exeter. Sidwell Street has a weekday street market with fruit, vegetables and fresh fish while a Farmers' Market brings local produce to the High Street on the last Thursday of each month.
